Meet our founder
Stefanie Abrams
A native of Colorado, attending high school in Littleton was great in 1999 until I began the college application process very late in the season with no guidance. I was a State Champion basketball player actively being recruited to colleges, but not much else was driving the process. I was a first-generation college student in my family, so needless to say, I would’ve loved to have a professional help me figure it all out. I was fortunate to have many athletic offers, which ultimately led me to my college choice. I was set on going out of state, 16 hours away from home, to start my journey at Saint Mary’s College, in Notre Dame, Indiana. The opportunity to be a collegiate athlete, all the while going to a prestigious women’s college, was a dream.
Life happened, and circumstances led me to return to Colorado before earning my degree from Saint Mary’s. Instead, I received my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance from the University of Colorado. I landed my first career in Denver and absolutely loved being in the hustle and bustle of a diverse community. I worked in the Finance industry for 6 years when I was led by faith to pursue a different calling and work more directly with people, not numbers; phew!
I returned to graduate school and received my Master of Science in School Counseling degree and was immediately hired to begin my school counseling career at East High School in Denver. I have always found great joy in supporting students in pursuing college or other post-secondary opportunities and easing their minds as they navigate this pivotal decision. Parents, I have done this with my daughter and know the struggle can be real. But enlightenment and growth at this tender age is truly an incredible gift! I want you to experience the joy in this process too.
As a school counselor for 15 years in urban and suburban communities, I know what it takes to build trusting and positive relationships with teenagers from all different backgrounds. Hence, they feel seen, heard, and valued in their journey toward adulthood. I am their biggest advocate (during the most awkward years of their lives). I seek to be the connector to parents and students, to give them the attention and support they deserve. Therefore, the founding of WayForward College Consulting became a priority for me to provide expertise in an area of interest and to lighten the ‘perceived burden’ for families in this process.
My family has begun to endure college visits whenever we travel, with a greater appreciation because it has allowed them to understand how unique each college campus can be. Not only have my children discovered the differences in colleges that would be best suited for them or not, but also for me in my professional role. The ‘feeling’ you get on campus can help guide the college decision. I have learned to experience college campuses with a student focus in mind and can picture students that would be a great fit for the college. I love exploring campuses, being very curious, and taking chances. I have met great people, coaches, and faculty by exploring and asking questions outside the regular tour. The most intriguing fact-finding and exciting events have happened to me by doing this. I can give you great tips to do this, too!
